| CFS Info : Fibromyalgia is one of the most common diseases affecting the muscles, tendons, and joints in women. Many health care professionals still do not recognize the condition as a disorder, most likely, because x-rays, blood tests, and biopsies often show no prevalent evidence to support the patient’s complaints.

(CFS) Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
It took two years to diagnose that I was suffering from CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) and another couple more years to free myself from this extremely debilitating condition
The reason why it took so long to diagnose was because so little is known about the disorder and what causes it and can vary tremendously In my case it was the feeling of a persistent flu-like feeling and even after a nights rest waking up to a feeling complete exhaustion and constant headaches that got progressively worse over time, until I was forced to seek medical advise. This was in the month of January 2001.
I underwent various blood and urine tests which all returned negative, for what ever they were looking for ? and including one for glandular fever. It was at this time that our family Doctor began to suspect that I could have contacted the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), and what I was suffering was actually the little known Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. (CFS)
Although he suspected that this could be the cause, he admitted that his knowledge on the condition was limited and referred me to the local hospital for further tests. Over the following months I underwent various tests, which included; multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and last but not least AIDS! And at the end of it all. the consultant admitted that they too wer none the wiser.
However, there was light at the end of the tunnel. The Consulting Physician from the hospital referred me to Dr D.G.Smith based in Essex UK. Who specialises in ME or CFS, as it is now widely known,
From our first consultation, he laid out his belief |

on the cause of CFS and whether or not I would agree to a set of treatments that he would prescribe.
From his studies over the past 20 years he could prove the condition was due to a biochemical disturbance within the central nervous system inside the brain.
The details are too numerous for this initial article, but there were two parts to the remedy that he offered
The first; He could prescribe medication (individual neurotransmitter regulators) tailor made to my condition to regulate these biochemical disturbances etc
And the second part of the therapeutic approach, would be a that I agree to a modified activity programme for both physical and mental activities. Without my agreement to the second part the first part would be a waste of both his and my time
I began a course of treatments with Dr Smith that eventually, brought me out of this feeling of hopelessness to regain a normal life style, and on 2005 signed off with a clean bill of health.
From this journey, starting on the 5th February 2003, the date of my first appointment with my local doctor, I have learnt quite a lot about the cause and cures of CFS. I have learnt to tame the beast but every watchfull for its return
Author: Brian J Worley From initial consultation with the family Doctor, to diagnosis and recovery, with the aid of Dr Smith, it took Brian five years to regain a normal life style. However, he accepts that recovery may not be absolute, as there is always the possibility of something triggering the condition again in the future
